CHOOSE EXPERIENCE

Why take unnecessary risks??
More experience is the difference between a positive outcome and potentially a complication or unexpected problem.
My name is Dr. Paul Cirangle, Director and Chief Medical Officer at Laparoscopic Associates of San Francisco and for the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America. I have performed more than 7,000 bariatric weight-loss surgeries, and I have never had a patient die during or as a result of surgery. I have performed more Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomies over a longer period of time (12 years) than any other surgeon in the US.
I am telling you this because I know that if you Google various bariatric weight-loss procedures, you will see advertisements for very low-cost procedures, some of which may be in Mexico or outside of the US. It may be tempting to price-shop for the lowest cost procedure, but I’d like you to consider facts about complications and experience. I believe you will come to the conclusion that you always get what you pay for…especially when it comes to your health and well-being.
(continued below)
Studies have shown that mortality rates and complications for weight-loss surgery are higher for surgeons with less experience. One mortality study by the Surgical Research Center noted 6 deaths in 995 surgeries (the results being from 33,117 operations at 106 centers.) You can read about these studies on Wikipedia.
Again, I have performed more than 7,000 surgeries and have not had a single patient death occur as a result of surgery. I am considered one of the pioneers of the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy – the fastest growing surgical procedure for weight loss in the United States.
I know that despite these facts, there are individuals who are more concerned with cost and are willing to accept the statistical risks. There are also patients who just want to find a bariatric surgeon near their home. Obviously, individuals certainly have the right to make these choices and I accept that. I just hope that you would consider having a consultation with me so that we can discuss the important issues in more detail.
If you are still reading this, then you’re likely someone for whom experience and outcomes are paramount. Maybe you don’t live near California or Hawaii (where I have offices) and you’re hesitant to travel. I have patients that have travelled from all parts of the US and even internationally because they value my experience and excellent results and especially their own lives. I understand the reluctance to travel and therefore I can offer an initial online video consultation wherein we will discuss if weight-loss surgery is right for you and if so, which procedure might be best.
I have worked very hard during my career achieving the experience and success that I have. I am not trying to compete with the discount surgery centers that offer Lap-Band for $3899. Someday, when those centers have more experience, I expect they will increase their rates. Like any other professional service business, those with less experience generally get paid less. Having said all this about cost, I want to work with patients who earnestly value and desire experience, and I have worked hard creating flexible payment options, which we can discuss during your consultation.
The last thing I’d like to discuss are my patient reviews, which I encourage you to read on Obesity Help. I’m proud of all of them, even the occasional accusation that I can be too stern, or not warm and “fuzzy” enough. You’ll see other patients respond by pointing out that this is exactly what makes me an excellent physician and why they appreciate me. Follow-up care and great outcomes also involve making sure the postoperative process is well supervised. Having no deaths in over 7,000 patient’s is, frankly, an extraordinary accomplishment that is a result of me running a tight ship. If I think you are in any way putting yourself at risk by not taking proper care, I am not going to treat that in a lackadaisical manner. Your life is too valuable and I take that very, very seriously.
If, after reading this, you decide that experience and minimizing risk is what is most important to you, I invite you to request either an in-office or video consultation by filling out the new patient registration form.
Sincerely,
Dr. Paul Cirangle
